What is an Ultrasound?

An ultrasound (sometimes referred to as a sonogram) is a non-invasive process of using sound waves to capture live images inside the patient’s body. Notably, ultrasound does not penetrate through air so some organs that contain gas/air (such as the lungs and sometimes intestines) can only be evaluated to a limited extent with this technology.

Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart. It allows assessment of the heart’s internal structure, including the heart chambers and valves, and function. Echocardiograms are commonly performed after an abnormality such as a murmur or arrythmia, are detected during a physical exam. Animal Imaging performs echocardiograms on small animals and equine at our facility. We partner with board certified cardiologists for interpretation of the echocardiogram and for management recommendations.

Common reasons for an Ultrasound

To evaluate:

  • Internal organ abnormalities
  • Detect Heart abnormalities (also known as an echocardiogram)
  • Thyroid glands
  • Parts of the chest
  • Ligaments and tendons

What to Expect

The procedure typically takes about an hour and can be performed while you wait. Because your pet will typically need to lie on their back on a specially designed cushion, a mild sedative is administered which will allow your pet to relax and be comfortable during the exam. The ultrasound probe must come in direct contact with the patient’s skin in order to acquire images, which means the hair will need to be clipped away from the imaged region. Once the exam has been completed, a reversal of the sedative can be administered and you can take the pet home with you.

Following the ultrasound or echocardiogram, one of our board-certified radiologists or cardiologists will review all the images and submit a final report within 24-48 hours. The report and clinical findings will then be sent to the referring veterinarian. Clients should follow up with the referring veterinarian for explanation of results and information on treatment or management.
