History
Ruby, 12-year-old female spayed Chihuahua, presented to Animal Imaging for echocardiogram after a presentation to her primary DVM with a complaint of coughing. On the initial exam, bloodwork was unremarkable and thoracic radiographs showed an enlarged heart, prompting referral for echocardiogram. A complete echocardiogram, including the internal chambers, valves, and great vessels, and the significant findings are represented below.
Diagnosis
The echocardiogram diagnosed this patient with degenerative valve disease with severe mitral regurgitation (ACVIM stage B2). Due to the dynamic nature of echocardiogram, it was assessed that the contractile function of the heart was sufficient, irrespective of the patient’s heart size. This dynamic capability allows the veterinarian to medically manage, and plan patient care based on the degree of dynamic changes in the patient’s clinical and objective conditions. Repeated echocardiograms can be performed at regular intervals to compare with the established baseline and treat as needed. This improves patient quality of care improving our ability to manage progressive disease conditions.
